| Rothiemurchus Estate One of the first stops for many visitors is Rothiemurchus Estate which combines outdoor activities with visitor information, and shopping with rural education. The estate has been owned by the Grants of Rothiemurchus for over 400 years. Today over 50% of the estate lies within the Cairngorm National Nature Reserve and the numerous attractions include a working fish farm, craft shop, farm shop, guided walks, wildlife safaris and clay pigeon shooting. The estate also includes picturesque Loch an Eilein with its much-photographed ruined castle and informative visitor centre. The splendid forests of the estate have long been harvested for their timber; they remain a fine example of native Caledonian woodland and the majority of the estate is now managed for nature conservation. Famous ancestors of the Grant family include Elizabeth Grant, the witty and intelligent daughter of the Laird of Grant whose 'Memoirs of a Highland Lady,' which gave a wonderful picture of the Highland way of life in the 18th century, were published posthumously in 1898. email: info@rothie.net website: http://www.rothiemurchus.net/ |
